Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had two enormous weeks at St Raphael’s. So many students have achieved fantastic accolades, we welcomed our new Kindergarten and Year 7 cohorts, and we had students undertake their first eucharist sacraments.
In addition, we celebrate the hard work, dedication, passion and enthusiasm demonstrated by the following students over the last two weeks:
- Charlie Graham and Elliott Bennett have achieved their Gold Award for the Duke of Edinburgh Award
- NSWCCC Cross Country Championship - representatives Laura Price and Laura Bennett
- Spelling Bee Diocese Winner - Cohan Howden and Primary participants David Kang, Ashley Kang, Penny McColl and Anant Dhumi
- NSW Legislative roadshow attendees Seamus McCormick and Alyvia Slade. Seamus participated in the Youth Forum discussing visions for the future, whilst Alyvia participated in public speaking - Actions Speak Louder than Words
- Western VET Award nominees - David Simms and Indigo Thornett
- Laura Price and Karly Woods selected for the NSWCCC Football (soccer) championships
- Aiden Gundersen, Bella Star and Laura Bennett participated in the CWA Public Speaking Competition. Bella received second place, moving on to the Inter Group Public Speaking Competition.
- Tommy Medway in Year 3 participated in CWA Speaking Competition and received Highly Commended
Congratulations to all students. Our small school makes a significant impact in the wider community. Also congratulations and thank you to the many staff involved in every one of these events. Their effort is often above and beyond the call of duty, enabling our students to extend their knowledge and skills, and rise to challenges.
Our 2025 Kindy and Year 7 Information Evenings for prospective enrolments were well received. We are proud at St Raphael’s to share our outstanding staff, students and school with new families. A great deal of preparation goes into preparing for these evenings, and we hope that parents and students go away with confidence that your children are seeing enrolment at a wonderful school.
I wanted to give you an update on our Capital Works. The plans for the Multipurpose Centre are coming along. As you can appreciate it is both an enormous undertaking, and a costly project so we want to get it right. Once the plans are completed, I will get staff, student and parent feedback. Air conditioners are going into each secondary classroom these school holidays, and the old evaporative coolers are removed. The plans for front of house administration are almost complete. Once completed, I will share them with parents and staff. This is an urgent new addition, making access to the office safe for prams, wheelchairs and mobility impaired. It will also enable us to complete the final renovations at the front of the school.
Finally, we have our Staff Development Day on June 17. I have invited parents to attend some or all of this day. On the day parents can join into our new Strategic Plan Workshop, and participate in giving feedback, as well attend a workshop in our exciting new next steps in our staff learning in inquiry and teacher clarity. Please ring the office if you wish to attend some or all of the day.
God Bless,
Michelle Deschamps - Principal

Welcome to another fabulous edition of the St Raphael’s Newsletter. It has been a busy two weeks at St Raph’s with students learning and enjoying their time in class. The quality of our teachers and our lessons inspires our students to learn and become critical thinkers. This is one part of what makes St Raphael's a first choice school.
This fortnight was a time of transition with the Year 6 into Year 7 information evening and the Kindergarten Welcome Evening occurring in Week 6. Both these occasions were opportunities to welcome parents into our school and to demonstrate the wonderful learning opportunities that St Raph’s offers from Kindergarten through to Year 12. St Raphael’s is a school that literally “punches above its weight”. The opportunities from learning in the classroom, to the sporting field, outdoor education, music and dance all happen due to a dedicated staff that care about each and every student at our school.
We have introduced new enrolment procedures at St Raphael's and part of this is the Parent/Student enrolment agreement. This document, which is to be signed by both the prospective student and parent, is an agreement that both parties will follow the rules and policies of the school and an undertaking that decisions made by the school will not be challenged by the parent or student. We want St Raphael’s to be the school of choice in this district, and this will happen through our concerted effort on individualised attention to our students and their learning opportunities.
Please feel free to come into our school and take enrolment packs from our school office for both Kindergarten and Year 7, or simply come and speak with me about the opportunities we offer at St Raphael’s Catholic School.

St Raphael’s Aboriginal Litany
The Wiradjuri are the people of the three rivers: Galari (Lachlan), Wambuul (Macquarie), and Murrumbidgee.
The land on which we now stand always was and always will be Wiradjuri Land
As a School community we gather for special events. We pray together for each and everyone.
The land on which we Pray always was and always will be Wiradjuri
We come together to sing and dance and celebrate who we are as a community.
The land on which we Sing and dance always was and always will be Wiradjuri Land
We are proud of our ancestors. We come from far and wide. With many generations walking their own path and journeying to this place.
The land on which we live always was and always will be Wiradjuri
For over 60 thousand years this land has been a place of learning. Catholic education in Cowra started with a dream over 150 years ago.
The land on which we learn always was and always will be Wiradjuri Land
The town of Cowra is a place of dreaming. The stories of our ancestors run strong in our hearts. As a school we too began with a dream and our cultural knowledge will continue to shine through the message of our students.
The land on which we Dream always was and always will be Wiradjuri Land
With a rich tradition shared with us by our Elders, we as a community share our spirituality and stories with one another.
The land on which we share, always was and always will be Wiradjuri Land
First Eucharist
Last Saturday evening, 13 of our students received the Sacrament of First Eucharist. This has been a special time in our children and their family's lives. Many thanks to the staff especially Mrs Hickman and Mrs Pollard who prepared the children so beautifully.
Year Nine Retreat
Last Tuesday, Yr 9 had their annual Retreat Day. It was a fabulous day, beginning with Mass and concluding with personal time for reflection. The theme for the day was I Wonder…Therefore I Grow: Good versus Evil. During the day we unpacked this theme and how it relates to our lives today. The day was broken up with fun games and plenty of break time. Many thanks to our Diocesan DeoQuest Team (Rosario and Natalia) Mr Wickham, Mr Jeffries, Mr Terry and Miss Ellison who helped run the day.

The 2024 Confirmation Programme will commence this week in our School and Parish. It will commence tomorrow, Wednesday 12th June with a Parent Information Session @ 5pm in the MSLC. Learning Engagement & Wellbeing
Adherence to Uniform Code
As we progress through this academic year, I would like to take a moment to address an important aspect of our school environment – adherence to the uniform code.
Uniforms help to level the playing field, reducing peer pressure related to clothing choices. This promotes equality among students, ensuring that the focus remains on their character and achievements rather than their attire.
Wearing the school uniform instils a sense of belonging and pride in our students. It helps them to feel connected the St Raphael’s history and community and to take responsibility for upholding its values and standards.
A uniform code reduces distractions in the classroom. When students wear uniforms, they can concentrate better on their studies, leading to a more productive and cohesive learning environment.
As parents and guardians, your support is vital in ensuring that the children adhere to the uniform code.
Here are a few ways you can help:
- Take a moment to talk to your child about why the uniform code is important.
- Help them understand that it is part of their responsibility as a member of our school community.
- Maintain regular contact with homeroom teachers and sport teachers.
- Have the time table visible when preparing for school.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude towards the uniform policy. Your perspective and attitude will influence your child’s view and compliance.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Attendance Matters
Attending school special events can instill a sense of pride and school spirit among students, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere.
Why encourage your child to attend and actively participate in school events?
- School events often incorporate school traditions and rituals. Attending these events allows students to connect with the rich history and culture of their school, fostering a sense of continuity and identity.
- Engaging in school events provides opportunities for your child to interact with peers and staff. This enhances their social skills, including communication, teamwork, and collaboration.
- Special events can create memorable experiences for your child. Participating allows them to look back on their school years with fondness, remembering the unique and enjoyable moments.
Why should your family attend and participate in school special events?
- School events provide opportunities for parents/carers to network and build connections with other families. This sense of community can extend beyond school events, creating a supportive network for both parents and students.
- Participating in school events provides opportunities for parents/carers to interact with teachers and school staff in a more relaxed setting. This strengthens communication channels and promotes a positive relationship between parents and educators.
- Special events often create lasting memories for students and their families. Attending together allows parents to share in these memorable experiences, contributing to a positive view of high school.

Week 6 Infants and Primary Award Recipients
Bronze and Level 7 Award Recipients
Congratulations to the following Primary students who have reached Bronze and Level 7 on the Behaviour Management Plan.
Dear Parents,
As we strive to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students and staff, we would like to remind you to please access the school via the front office before entering the school premises. This helps us monitor who is on site and ensures everyone's safety.
Could parents please ensure that they are saying their goodbyes to their children at the top of the driveway of a morning, and not accessing the playground via the driveway. While we understand that as parents you may have a need to visit, especially for parent reading, it is school protocol that visitors sign in at the office.
If you need to speak to teachers or staff, please reach out via phone, email, or schedule a meeting.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Throughout the week, the boys will play against the best Under 11 boys from across the state, both Catholic and Public Schools. To be selected in the Polding team has been a big achievement already. Well done and good luck boys!
Netball Schools Cup + Soccer Fun Day
With the date changing from this Wednesday 12th June, we were informed late last week that the Netball Schools Cup + Soccer Fun Day will now be held on Tuesday 2nd July. (Week 10). All of the students from Years 3-6 recently selected which sport they would like to compete in on the day. Thank you to Mrs. O'Reilly and Mr. Jeffries for organising the selection trial for the Stage 3 Netballers who will compete in a competitive section that day. A canteen will be operating at Col Stinson Park for both the Soccer and Netball players, but children are still encouraged to bring some food from home and lots of water. No football boots are to be worn, with all players asked to wear their joggers. We are looking forward to a fun day. Parents are invited to come along and cheer their child on.
Lawn Bowls
Year 6 are currently undertaking a five week program for Sport at the Cowra Bowling Club, having a go at Lawn Bowls. Last week, under the watchful eye and guidance of the very skilled Mrs. Hubber, both classes had their first attempt at it. The students soon appreciated that it wasn't as easy as they may have thought. Over the next four weeks, we hope to pick a team to represent St. Raphael's against other schools in the area. We will keep you posted on our 'hopefully' improvements. Special thanks to the Cowra Bowling Club for allowing our students to participate in this great sport; and to Mrs. Hubber (senior) for giving up her time to help us out, showing us the ropes.

This Friday 14th June Will O'Reilly will be in Parkes representing the Bathurst Diocese in the sport of Touch Footy. He was selected in Term 4 of last year at trials held in Dubbo. We wish Will all the very best for this latest sporting adventure.
